SYC celebrated the full return of the annual Adult Learn to Sail Weekend September 9 – 11, 2022. The pandemic cancelled the weekend in 2020. The 2021 weekend did go forward but with reduced numbers. The 2022 weekend was back in full force and was a huge success.
SYC saw the number of participants almost back to pre-covid numbers with 14 students enjoying a full weekend of sailing. Among the participants were new members to the club, friends of members as well as the general public who wanted to hone their sailing skills.
Sylvie Sabourin, Program Coordinator, said “it was pure joy to see so many people interested in sailing”. Instructional sessions such as boat safety, sailboat terminology, sailing theory, racing rules and commonly-used sailing knots were taught throughout the weekend. Students were also able put their newfound knowledge to the test as they embarked on club member boats for a couple of sails.
Members helped out with food, coffee and treats throughout the weekend. An awesome steak BBQ was enjoyed Saturday evening followed by a campfire and smores. A gorgeous moon also made an appearance.
“The highlight of the weekend was the racing on Sunday morning and the use of colourful spinnakers by several boats,” emphasized Sylvie Sabourin. “Light winds did not hamper the excitement as the participants took part in the Skippers Meeting prior to the race to review the Race Course and Rules. Eleven boats ventured into the bay which was a great show of member support for the weekend.” Unfortunately, the race was called due to lack of wind but a good time was had by all!
Definitely another great weekend at SYC.
