As a past member of the GP14 Association, I would like to thank SYC for the reception held yesterday.
Gill Beddow is the Chair of the 2018 GP14 World Championship to be held in Mounts Bay, Cornwall, UK. Gill and her husband Chris were passing through on a holiday visiting friends in Calgary, Toronto and Montreal.
Many of our members are aware that SYC held the first Worlds back in 1967. Gill presented the SYC with the 2018 World banner now added to our collection of burgees in the Round Room.
Mike Cox attended the event yesterday. He was the winner of the 1966 GP14 Canadian Championship held at Hudson YC as a member of the South Staffordshire Sailing Club in the UK. The SSSC has 350 members on a small reservoir about 65 acres, about a quarter the size of the lake in front of SYC. He immigrated to Canada later that year and sailed as a SYC sailor at the Worlds here at SYC finishing 12th in the fleet of 45.
It is a small world. Mike and Gill were astounded to discover that: Gill and Chris are long time members of SSSC. They joined some 30 years ago when their teen aged sons wanted to learn to sail. Secondly, Gill had trained in the same hospital where Mike Cox was a house physician and Margaret Cox was a nurse supervisor.
