Past Commodore’s Dinner Award Winners 2017

Just a quick thank you to everyone who attended the 2017 Past Commodore’s Dinner. Thank you to everyone involved for organizing such a fun night.

CLAM DIGGER TROPHY

Fleet Captain’s recognition of an unfortunate and possible amusing incident on the water usually the result of cutting corners and causing damage. Awarded to Michael Beelich: In the past recent years, Michael developed a propensity to upgrade his sailboat on a yearly basis and, in the process having to familiarize himself with the new acquisition. 2017 was no exception with the acquisition of Essoin. After recently upgrading the vessel’s chartplotter/depth sounder, Michael, accompanied by Colleen, took part in the 2017 edition of the Borland race. During the upriver leg, as Colleen was sent forward for some fine tuning, Michael got distracted and managed to bring Essoin to a sudden stop on the muddy shoal of Croil Island despite his latest technology upgrade. This event proved to be an invaluable teaching point to relatively new sailors of the flotilla as they got to witness the “this is how we get a boat back in the channel” procedure.

UPSIDE DOWN TROPHY

Awarded at the sole discretion of the Fleet Captain to the club member in recognition of an odd experience on the water, usually a memorable nautical blunder, faux pas, unseamanship act, capsize etc. Awarded to Simon Landry: It was a dark and stormy night…well not really, just a sunny and windy week day and Simon decided to go for a romantic sail with Huguette. As we all know, plans are subject to change and on 6 July, Jablyer’s engine decided otherwise. As Simon was feverishly attempting to rectify the situation, the south westerly wind blew the vessel to its lee shore, just east of the mooring field off McCoy Bay. As a true gentleman, Simon dropped the anchor, got off his vessel and walk back to SYC Clubhouse to seek assistance which was rendered by Bob Dumond and yours truly. As the rescue boat approached Jablyer, Huguette made it quite clear that the first thing she now wanted to do was to jump ship and walk back to the club. Jablyer is a nice O’Day 25 sailboat now up for sale, for those interested.

RUSTY NAIL

Awarded by the Fleet Captain to commemorate an embarrassing sailing moment or incident. In 2017, the competition appeared to be fierce for this award, as many attempted to reconfirm the position of the foundation by Island 17, or the ‘’Rock’’ haunting the approach/departure of McCoy Bay. For 2017, the palm goes to Jeff Ridal. Late afternoon 12 October (13 October being crane-out), Jeff and Brenda decided to go out one last time with Whirlaway to empty the holding tank of their vessel however, the “Rock” decided otherwise and stopped them in their track. After some intense moments, Jeff managed to free Whirlaway and returned to its mooring. During his debrief, Jeff was quite concerned that crane-out of larger vessels located outside McCoy Bay, the very next morning, could be affected as his boat only drew ‘’four and a quarter’’. Interestingly enough, the crane-out went without a hitch (access to McCoy Bay). PS Holding tank still require servicing and award may have to be renamed Stinky Nail in 2018.

MOST IMPROVED SAILOR(S) OF THE YEAR

Awarded to SYC member showing significant increase in nautical competency, determination and/or race results. Awarded to Kate Miller and Ann Marie Blinkhorn. Late 2016, they upgraded from a Siren 17 to a Tanzer 22 and devoted 2017 to further develop their overall sailing skills using every opportunity. Braving the elements, they enthusiastically took part in the 2017 edition of the Borland race and acquired a wealth of information from Peter and Nathalie.

SENIOR SAILOR OF THE YEAR

Fleet Captain’s selection of all round club members who by enthusiasm, sportsmanship and participation contributes to the general operation of racing and cruising activities. Awarded to Pam and Shawn Maloney. Pam and Shawn Maloney have greatly contributed to the SYC for many years. While most individuals associate their names to SYC annual Adult Sail Program, they are also competitive, yet amiable, club racers, striving to assist all those interested in perfecting their sailing/racing skills.

BRASS MONKEY TROPHY

The trophy which shows See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Speak No Evil is for recognition of the Fleet Captain’s Crew of race timekeepers, rain or shine and in health or sickness (well almost). Awarded to Betty Chaput, Myrna Earle and Marjorie McCoy. Your wealth of knowledge and experience greatly enable the racing activities at SYC and certainly made my job not only easier but enjoyable. Thanks to each and every one of you for your contribution and support. My successor will be in good hands.
