It all started in 1957, when a group of like minded people got together to enquire about sailing arrangements on Lake St Lawrence following Inundation Day July 1, 1958. Some of those involved were Bill Mitchell, Harold Skaistkalns, Tom Strawford, Neil McGillis, Robin Peters.
By 1958, Neil McGillis was the first commodore of the newly formed Stormont Yacht Club. In 1959, there were 40 members and annual dues were $5/year.
In 1960, the first section of the club house was built. In 1961 the still existing Round Room was added on.
By 1964 SYC was host to the North American GP14 Championship and in 1967, just 9 years after formation SYC hosted the First GP14 World Championship. Imagine that a short 9 years later. We have come a long way baby.
On June 23rd 2018, SYC celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the club. The day started off with the Sea Cadets Raising the Colours followed by a concert provided by the Sea Cadet Band lead by our very own David Barkley.
The kids put on an amazing show.
In the afternoon quite a few members who own the Mini 12’s stood out at the end of the dock in the pouring rain competing maneuvering around the course. No protests were called and everyone was a little wet but enjoyed themselves.
Much socializing took place before, during and after dinner and it was nice to see some old friends and past members. I would especially like to point out the Past Commodore’s who were in attendance.

In the evening we were entertained by The County Lads. These young boys were amazing and if you ever have a chance to see them play, I highly recommend you do.
I believe everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a pleasure organizing this event. My appreciation goes out to Cindy Bickerstaffe, Betty Chaput and Marjore McCoy, the other members on the 60th Anniversary Committee.
More photos are to come… Stay tuned!
